Accept My Dare Be a Toastmaster OfficerDo you want to enjoy the benefits of an active Toastmasters club? Do you want ten or
members showing up at weekly meetings? Then you have come to the right place.
When I heard that our club (CIGNA Lunchtime Toastmasters #9617) was electing
officers for the 2005/2006 year, I made sure that I was not around. There was no way I
could take on such a grave responsibility, with only a few months of Toastmaster
experience under my belt. A fellow member who had joined Toastmasters with me had
no such fear and volunteered for a VP role.
A year later, I looked back and noticed that all of the club officers had survived the term.
None had battle scars (at least none that I could see). In fact all of the officers had
improved their speaking skills and seemed to be enjoying Toastmasters more than before.
I realized that I had wasted a year by not volunteering for an officer role, and I took the
challenge when I volunteered to be VP Education for the 2006/2007 year. I accepted the
dare to grow my speaking and leadership skills.
Now, as the year is coming to an end I am extremely glad I accepted the dare. I wonder
why I did not do it before. I have learned my lesson and now embrace opportunities as
quickly as I can, knowing that the feeling of discomfort only lasts until one has mastered
the role.
I dare you today. Take the next step become a club officer, or join your district
leadership team to enjoy more of your Toastmaster benefits.
